Research Activities:
The research in the Director’s Research Unit under Professor Santanu Bhattacharya is focused on interdisciplinary approaches involving biology, chemistry, material science, soft matter and supramolecular chemistry. The group is involved in the design and synthesis of various lipids, stimuli-sensitive oligopeptide sequences and surfactants of different molecular and structural backbones. The group also studies their structure-activity relationship by various biophysical and pharmaceutical analytical techniques. These biomaterials are then utilized for the targeted delivery of gene, siRNA and anticancer drugs. Thus we develop multi-target therapeutics and network analysis with a focus on cancer.

The group also utilizes its synthetic experience and research expertise for the design, synthesis and characterization of various small molecular ligands to stabilize higher order DNA or RNA secondary structures like G-quadruplex etc. The design of DNA binding ligands is an attractive strategy to combat cancer by suppressing the activity of telomerase.

My group also designs new gelators of different structural backbones and study the properties of the resulting gels using a variety of physical methods. These gels generally have widespread applications in materials and biological sciences.

Various sensors, with a focus on societal needs, are also being developed in my group to detect biologically relevant species, environmentally hazardous ions and materials at nanogram level. We investigate for the appropriate rationale to explain most of these phenomena at the molecular level, which provide useful perspectives for future designs and new spin-offs.
